Well folks, we are off and r̶u̶n̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ wrestling!
Last week, we held our first 3 club events, culminating with the very first District Wrestling practice. Many thanks to those of you who came to our opening mixer, stopped by our booth at the Team DC tent during Sunday's Pride festival, and joined us at Ballou H.S. for practice number one! Here are a few scenes from our first week.
If you weren't able to join us last week, the good news is the best is yet to come. Next week, we will welcome guest coach Chris Lorefice to run our second practice, on Monday, June 17 at 6:30pm. Chris is the outgoing director of Wrestlers Without Borders, our partner organization that coordinates several other adult wrestling clubs worldwide and organizes the annual Sin City Classic wrestling tournament in Las Vegas. He's also the regular coach at thePhiladelphia Spartans, our closest WWB neighbors.
Remember: Every wrestler's first practice is free! For more details and information on how we run practices, visit our website. Be sure to obtain your USA Wrestling membership too if you haven't already.
New Ways to Stay in Touch
As we continue to grow, we want to make sure club members feel a sense of community. To that end, we've set up a new Discord, where wrestlers can chat with their fellow members, in addition to sharing important and timely club information.
We've also set up a District Wrestling WhatsApp Hotline for a more timely and urgent way to get in touch with club leadership. At Ballou H.S. but are unsure of where to go for practice? At a tournament but forgot to bring a singlet? Use thehotline to get in touch with one of us fast.
Cue the Entrance Music
A great piece of advice we got early on is one we've taken to heart: practice should be a party. And any party demands good music. We're curating a playlist of some of our favorite beats to crank up during practices, and making it available here via Apple Music. Want to add your favorites? Come to practice and join thefun. One rule: bops only.
Olympian and college great Kyle Dake demonstrates some of the fundamentals of a good wrestling stance. We discussed and practiced this on Monday, but here's a good breakdown of why your stance is so important, and how to make sure yours is an asset and not a liability.
