Vol. 8: Takedowns and Tournaments

Welcome back, wrestlers.

This was a week of firsts — and seconds. On Monday, District Wrestling welcomed our first guest coach: Chris Lorefice, the longtime executive director of Wrestlers Without Borders and currently the coach of the Philadelphia Spartans wrestling club. He helped us drill some takedown fundamentals, as well as how to defend against a pin and back points. You can read a great summary from practice by one of our members over on the District Wrestling Discord (you joined, right???).

Monday marked our second-ever practice, and we were thrilled to see even more folks turn out for Week 2 than our debut. Love an upward trajectory! We certainly had a good time, but don’t just take our word for it: hear from club membersthemselves who dropped in.

If you haven’t had a chance to come to a practice yet, we’ve got great news: you’re never more than a few days away from the next opportunity! We’ll be back on the mats this Monday at our usual time of 6:30pm. Remember: your first practice is free, and returning wrestlers pay just $20 per practice. Location and other details can be found here.

USA Wrestling Memberships

Thanks to those who have already completed their USA Wrestling memberships! If you haven’t already, please be aware that new members will need to complete a Safe Sport training, which does take some time. Active USA Wrestling memberships are required, so please take some time to complete yours today. You can save your application and return to it over the course of a few days if you can’t complete the safe sport training in one sitting. If you have any questions about the USA Wrestling membership process, please don’t hesitate to reach out here.

Melee Til Midnight

This Saturday, hundreds of wrestlers from around the country will hit the mats in nearby Fairfax, VA for Melee Til Midnight, an annual offseason tournament hosted by George Mason University. District Wrestling will be in attendance to watch some of the action (and possibly volunteer as well). Details for spectators can be found here. There is an open bracket for any wrestlers 18 and over, so if you’re interested in competing, registration is open until Friday night. Be aware: there will be Division I-caliber wrestlers in attendance; this is not a good opportunity for anyone who's new or rusty to compete.

If you plan to attend in any capacity, let us know by RSVPing here!
